Internet Marketing Lists - Are You Oversubscribed?

I was a participant on an internet marketing webinar recently where one of the questions that was asked was “whose list should I be on?” and having heard a few responses to this question previously I nearly didn’t listen to the answer as I simply thought that the hosts would say “ours of course” and then reel off a few additional names of big time marketers who they do business with and that would be that… boy was I lucky I didn’t miss their real answer!

Somewhat surprisingly rather than run down a list of who’s who in the internet marketing scene these guys actually came out and said something along the lines of “as few as possible, especially if you are trying to make money online”. Now if that didn’t surprise you too then you have obviously learned this lesson in the past, but for those of you going ‘huh?’ the explanation was so obvious that it made perfect sense.

The reason these guys were saying that you should avoid being on too many lists, especially if you are trying to build an internet marketing business of your own, was simply that each and every time you receive an email you are being tempted away from working on your business.

Think about how many emails you receive a day telling you about the next big thing in internet marketing and how you can make thousands in mere minutes, then think about how many on average you read and then click on to get more information. Even if you ignore half of them if you are like me it can be extremely difficult not to click on those links and see what exactly it is that these internet marketing gurus are trying to sell you today.

But the guys on the webinar were absolutely right, for each and every one of those emails that you are receiving and then following up on you could be lose between 2 and 10 minutes of your time doing something that isn’t helping you to build your business.

Imagine if you decided to read and click on the link in just 6 emails every day, that could be up to an hour of your time that you could have spent writing articles or doing keyword research… and you will never get that time back! Take a minute to just think about that for a second, only 6 emails could steal an hour of your day, now think about how many offers you receive on a daily basis.

So take a minute to evaluate just how many of those subscriptions you really need, after all with so many people in the internet marketing business today having multiple lists and giving away great free content it’s not like you couldn’t get back on to a list if you really missed seeing the offers… maybe unsubscribe from a few and see how you get on without them.

Of course if you aren’t keen on giving up on your email subscriptions and you are in the internet marketing industry then here are a couple of tips…

1) Turn off your email while you are trying to work, there’s nothing worse than being on a roll and quickly checking your email only to be drawn into clicking a link, the next thing you know it’s 10 minutes later and you can’t remember what you were actually doing.

2) Learn from the emails you do receive by figuring out which ones did make you want to click and which ones you wish you never saw, copy those that interested you and test them on your own lists, actually make them work for you rather than just taking up your time.

Take a few minutes today to look at all the emails you receive and cut a few ties to marketers you haven’t gotten any value from for a while, don’t worry about missing the next big thing in internet marketing as in all likelihood if it is the greatest internet marketing offer ever made the guys you decided to stick with will certainly let you know.
