What Convinces You To Buy The Latest Product?

by Stefan Dyke on September 18, 2008

So you’ve clicked on the ad on Google, or followed a link from the latest email you’ve received from one of the many lists that you are on, and you’re reading your way through the sales material – what is it that convinces you to buy this particular product?

  • Do you read every word and analyse what the writer is telling you?
  • Do you look at the proof of income imagery and try to remember if you’ve seen it before somewhere else?
  • Do you skip through the headlines to determine if you’re interested first and then delve into the details once you’ve established if the page holds just a small amount of interest?
  • Or finally, does it really just come to the cost/benefit ratio that you’ve set for yourself (probably without even knowing it)?

It’s an interesting question that I think comes down to each individual and their mindset while they’re reading that particular salesletter. For some people it’s about the emotional connection to what the writer is saying that drives them to hit the order now button, whereas for others it’s the believability of what is being said.

Something that I’ve noticed for me personally when I read through the various sales pages is that the more involved I get in marketing products on the internet the harder it is to push the order button. Now I don’t know if this is purely because I have bought things in the past which have disappointed or because I am starting to recognise the little tricks that copywriters use to entice a reader into “buying now!”.

Part of it definitely comes down to being more inclined to spend that $27, $47 or $97 on promoting or developing my own products, or investing in the marketing of those products. I find myself thinking each time I get to the point in a salesletter where the writer wants me to order “how many visitors to my web pages is this worth” or “where could I better spend this money”, and then acting accordingly.

Now this post is not designed to suggest that I will stop buying products but as someone who is building an internet business myself the question is no longer “will this product make me rich like it promises”, but rather “can this product help me build my business long term” and in a lot of situations the answer is no.

Granted there are still some amazing products out there, but I’m more tempted to buy after they’ve been on the market for some time – even though I’ll miss out on that wonderful, today only, special offer, but then how many times have you seen a “today only” offer only to return the next day to see the exact same offer still available?

One thing I’ll still admit however is finding myself, on the odd occasion, reaching for my wallet after being enthralled by what a particular writer has to say. I guess I should take this as a good sign that this is a product I should buy, review and then promote – if it lives up to expectations and gets through my internal purchasing filter then I can probably bet there are plenty of others out there like me.

So what about you?

What pushes your buttons these days? Are you a newbie to the world of internet marketing, or have you been in the game for years? Do you jump at every new opportunity or do you find yourself carefully weighing each one against your personal “what’s this worth to me” barometer?

Have a think – what convinces you to buy the next product?
